Update From Rev Dennis Aubey Print E-mail
We received the following update from Jordan Aubey's father, Rev. Dennis Aubey:

Drury Inn, Joplin, Mo.

Jordan meets Comfort Dog Jackson in Joplin

We stayed in St. Louis Sunday night – Bea fell asleep almost as soon as we got into the motel room so it was good that we stopped halfway!

Next day the heat arrived (for all of us, right?!) and we arrived in Joplin about 4:00 p.m. Went to Jordan’s new apartment – met the landlady and her daughter (Paige). Paige had two broken hips about 2 years ago so she not only loves KOAM but has a heart for Jordan (God does work) We unpacked the truck in about 2 hours – and drank gallons of water! Jordan loves his new place!

Monday night we stayed at a Holiday Inn. We decided to stay in a motel until we got the apartment situated but the Holiday Inn was booked for the next nights. The girl at the desk called and found us a place at the Drury. Interesting – people literally cry when they can’t help you – I’m not exaggerating! Yesterday we had to get some banking done – Jordan had lost all his checks, etc. The thing we learned there is everything takes twice as long to do – you not only take care of your business but people ask about your story and then you listen to their story …! And then you cry a bit together. The lady at the bank told us several ‘angels and children’ stories – there are too many of them to dismiss – I told Jordan either people all decided at the same time to independently make up these stories or something happened that is beyond human experience – and almost exclusively with children. God was/is good!!!

Last night we got Jordan’s bedroom situated so today we’re tentatively going to shop for washer/dryer and do the kitchen and front room. The furniture donations are just so wonderful and appreciated! We hope to get that done so I can leave tomorrow.

Odds n ends – my Mom may be going home today – her treatments are finished and she is doing reasonably okay – one day at a time … thanks for our loved ones who pray for her … Immanuel Lutheran is doing VBS this week so it was interesting to see that – I think they do a supper and an evening program – the Comfort Dogs are there each evening.

I’ll see many of you God willing Sunday – Bea is staying another two weeks – Jordan will be able to do therapy next week and start back to work – doctor says he’s mending perfectly!!! God bless you all.

Joplin Tornado Survivor Jordan Aubey Returns to New Apartment in Joplin Next Sunday - Let's help him get back on his feet! Print E-mail
Jordan Aubey

Jordan Aubey - Tornado Survivor

Many of you are aware of one of the Joplin, Missouri tornado survivors who lost everything - Jordan Aubey - son of Rev. Dennis Aubey from Christ Our Savior in Winfield, Illinois. Jordan, a member of Immanuel Lutheran in Joplin was at home in his second story apartment when the tornado destroyed the entire building. He jumped into his bathtub and held on while the entire apartment building and literally ALL of his earthly possessions (including his car) were lost. Jordan ended up in the hospital injured and traumatized - yet his faith was fully intact!

Lutheran Church Charities visited with Jordan and financially helped him while he was in the hospital and then helped arrange his transportation back to his parents' home in Winfield. Thank you Ed and Jan Boerman for using your RV to transport Jordan back. Marie Payes from LCC and Comfort Dog Tara have been regular visitors with Jordan in Winfield.

Jordan is now ready to return to Joplin. LCC will be providing a truck to transport items he needs to move into his new apartment. Jordan and his parents will leave after church next Sunday, July 17. Jordan will be returning to his job as a reporter for CBS KOAM-TV and FOX 14 KFJX-TV.

Would you help us fill the truck and help Jordan replace essential items?

Many items have already donated but Jordan is still in need of:
  • living room furniture
  • regular household items and small appliances

Lutheran Church Charities would also like to present Jordan with some financial assistance to help him get back on his feet. If you would like to contribute - Dollar Per Dollar will go to Jordan, click here.

Immanuel Joplin Begins Transition to Long Term Recovery: LCC Continues to Support Their Efforts Print E-mail
With the school season quickly approaching, Immanuel Lutheran Church and Martin Luther School in Joplin are beginning the process of transitioning their disaster relief center into a long term recovery ministry. This includes considering a facility away from the church property that will house the recovery efforts and returning the school building to its original purpose. Volunteers are needed to help with this transition work and will be helping paint classrooms, lay new tile in bathrooms and help repair areas of the yard that have been damaged by heavy traffic. Skilled volunteers are needed to assist with repairs to homes damaged but not destroyed by the May 22nd tornado. Over time there will be a need for professionals in the building trades as Immanuel plans to play a role in building new homes in Joplin. LCC will continue to register volunteers for the efforts in Joplin and update our website and newsletter with all the latest information.

Joplin Update - Immanuel Joplin Considers 'Rule of 10' and Their Role in Ongoing Recovery Print E-mail

LCC Support Goes On with Comfort Dogs and Staff

K9s in Joplin In disaster recovery there is the Rule of 10. It takes a certain number of days for search and rescue. The recovery period is ten times that number and the rebuilding period is ten times that. In Joplin the search and rescue took 14 days. Based on the Rule of 10 the recovery phase, the time for debris removal, demolition, etc. will be 140 days and the process of rebuilding will take 1400 days...nearly five years. Immanuel Joplin maintains one of the few remaining relief centers in all of Joplin and the most comprehensive. The church and Martin Luther School are being recognized by city leaders and others for their efforts and they are very much appreciated. Now the staff and volunteers at Immanuel are considering their long term plans to provide for the needs in Joplin and they are bold to say they have the opportunity to be a permanent presence for aid and comfort to those in need. It's an exciting time for them born out of this awful tragedy. LCC staff member, Tim Kurth, has returned to Joplin delivering more Care Cards and another check for the efforts there. He is supporting staff as they consider all the details involved in keeping their relief efforts strong while still repairing their own facilities and preparing for the coming school year. Comfort dogs Ladel and JoJo arrived with handlers Natalie Soper, Elina Klippel, Pastor Paul Klopke and Becky Staehlin on Monday, June 27 and will serve in Joplin for the week.

Joplin SurvivorFor now Immanuel is transitioning out of some immediate care activities into longer term options. The relief center has been almost fully moved into containers behind the school. They are now serving only lunches and that will continue at least another couple of weeks. They continue to deliver water and Gatorade out to workers in the devastated area. They are scaling back the medical clinic by the end of June. Orphan Grain Train has set up a shower trailer on the premises so volunteers can shower at the end of the day and it's also open to others working in the affected areas. There is still a tremendous need for cleaning products (bleach, household cleaners, brooms, mops, laundry detergent, etc.), bath towels and bedding (NOT quilts and blankets but sheets and sheet sets for beds). As always, cash donations and gift cards are best as all of the needed items can be purchased locally when stock runs low.
